The most distinctive feature of this Hawthorn Burl is its retained exterior. Layers of naturally flaky bark remain around the perimeter, contrasting with the carved and finished cream-coloured interior.

Multiple coats of finish were applied to preserve and protect the remaining bark while allowing the interior to read as a more refined surface. A restrained magenta epoxy accent sits among the darker markings.

Within the pale wood, a dark region that initially appeared continuous separated into smaller streams and flecks as material was removed. The final pattern records that change in depth, revealing a figure that could not be fully understood from the original surface alone.
