AMPHION

Despite its broad, low profile, this White Spruce Burl weighs remarkably little due to its nature as a low-density Ontario softwood. The exterior cambium edge is covered by clusters of pores, spikes and cavities that corelate to the interior patterns.

Dark lines travel across the shape, following an irregular pattern that contrasts with the lighter surrounding grain. These lines are formed from an event in this tree's life that caused it to start producing bark through the grain rather than across it, which is an extreme anomaly compared to typical burl formation.

A natural fracture divides the formation, now bridged by emerald-green epoxy that stabilizes the two sides while making the break part of the sculpture's visual composition.
